While Samsung has decided to equip the Galaxy S5 Mini with mid-range internals, the Xperia Z3 Compact comes with flagship-grade specs. You get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB internal storage. The memory can be further expanded with the use of microSD cards. The battery capacity is very impressive for a 4.6-inch smartphone, with a typical capacity of 2600mAh. It comes with clever software optimization for a two-day battery life. It also comes with LTE Cat.4 LTE support, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, NFC and MHL support.
The Galaxy S5 Mini is more of a mid-ranger when it comes to specs. It comes with an Exynos 3470 Quad-Core A7 chipset with Mali 400MP4 GPU. There’s 1.5GB RAM and 16GB onboard memory. The battery is 2100mAh, which is about on par for a mid-range device. Connectivity options include LTE Cat.4 support, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n dual-band support.
The Galaxy S5 Mini currently runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, with a 4.4.4 update expected to arrive soon. The Xperia Z3 Compact comes with Android 4.4.4 out of the box.
The Galaxy S5 Mini is equipped with an 8MP rear camera that’s capable of shooting 1080p videos at 30 fps. The front-facing camera has a 2.1MP resolution and can also shoot 1080p videos.
The Xperia Z3 Compact has a much higher resolution 20.7MP camera and is also capable of shooting videos in 4K Ultra HD resolution at 30 fps and 1080p videos at 60 fps. The camera features an aperture of f2.0 and has a 26mm wide-angle lens. The front-facing camera is similar to the Galaxy S5 Mini at 2.2MP and can record 1080p videos.
As mentioned earlier, Samsung has included quite a few of the major features of the S5 into the S5 Mini. The fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor and the S Health app are available on the S5 Mini, and to some extent do help it differentiate itself from the other mid-range smartphones as well as other minis available on the market. It also comes with an IR blaster, so you can use it as your universal remote control.
The Xperia Z3 Compact, on the other hand, offers High-Res Audio playback, PlayStation 4 Remote Play, and smart social camera with unique apps from Sony.
The Galaxy S5 Mini really cannot match up to the Xperia Z3 Compact overall, and offers a weaker performance, a less capable camera, a worse battery life, and an uninspiring
